While both major parties committed to advancing crypto legislation during the campaign, only the opposition pledged to deliver draft laws within 100 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, industry leaders say it\u2019s time for the Albanese government to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-industry-voices-call-for-fast-tracked-legislation\">Industry Voices Call for Fast-Tracked Legislation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Joy Lam, Binance\u2019s head of global regulatory and APAC legal, said the exchange has been actively working with Treasury since late 2023, but emphasized that time is running out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTiming is really quite critical now because this has been talked about for years,\u201d she said. \u201cOther regions are moving forward. Australia can\u2019t afford to fall further behind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John O\u2019Loghlen, APAC managing director at Coinbase, echoed that sentiment. He urged the government to establish a Crypto-Asset Taskforce within its first 100 days to develop legislation aimed at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protecting consumers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encouraging innovation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preventing talent and capital from moving overseas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>BTC Markets CEO Caroline Bowler added that the Labor win presents a strong opportunity for meaningful progress on crypto regulation. \u201cBeyond politics, this result sets the stage for Australia to create a clear and modern regulatory path for digital assets,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-global-momentum-adds-pressure\">Global Momentum Adds Pressure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The call for action comes amid a global shift toward clearer crypto frameworks. The UK recently released its draft rules, stablecoin legislation is moving in the U.S., and the European Union has already adopted its Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a very clear shift happening,\u201d Lam noted. \u201cEveryone else is putting in place the frameworks that support sustainable industry growth. Australia needs to move quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-government-promises-draft-laws-this-year\">Government Promises Draft Laws This Year<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Treasurer Jim Chalmers\u2019 office confirmed that exposure draft legislation for digital asset platforms and payment system modernization is expected by the end of June. The government also said reforms would be introduced gradually to avoid disrupting existing businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Lam expressed uncertainty about whether the timeline will hold. \u201cI\u2019m not sure if this quarter is still realistic,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, some believe the government&#8217;s slower pace may end up benefiting the sector. Critics had previously feared that a rushed approach might mirror the U.S. administration\u2019s hard stance, which treats many cryptocurrencies as securities and discourages bank involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are signs the Australian government\u2019s stance has evolved.
