U.S. prosecutors described his actions as aiding \u201cvile terrorist atrocities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal Judge David Novak handed down the sentence on May 7, following Chhipa\u2019s December conviction for conspiring to support and directly funding a designated terrorist organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-crypto-fueled-terrorism-and-prison-breaks\">Crypto-Fueled Terrorism and Prison Breaks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the U.S. Department of Justice, between October 2019 and October 2022, Chhipa funneled over $185,000 to ISIS. He allegedly used crypto to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fund violent activities carried out by the Islamic State<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assist female ISIS members in escaping detention camps in Syria<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Move money across borders via Turkey into Syria<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Chhipa reportedly raised these funds using social media platforms. He collected donations both online and in person, sometimes traveling hundreds of miles. After converting the cash into cryptocurrency, he transferred it to contacts in Turkey, who then smuggled it into Syria for use by ISIS operatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-failed-escape-and-a-global-chase\">A Failed Escape and a Global Chase<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities revealed that during the FBI\u2019s investigation, Chhipa attempted to flee the country in an effort to evade prosecution. His escape plan included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Withdrawing $1,800 after an FBI search of his home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paying a stranger at Taco Bell for a ride to a relative\u2019s house<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Purchasing bus tickets under various names and email aliases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fleeing from Virginia to Guatemala via Mexico<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Booking flights through Panama and Germany to Egypt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Interpol issued a Blue Notice that led to his capture and return to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-doj-sends-a-strong-message\">DOJ Sends a Strong Message<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the significance of the case, stating: \u201cThis defendant directly financed ISIS in its efforts to commit vile terrorist atrocities against innocent citizens in America and abroad.
