The company recently launched a pilot project in Calgary, Alberta that converts flared natural gas into electricity for mining and computing workloads. Canaan partnered with Aurora AZ Energy to build a 2.5 MW off-grid site that uses stranded gas from remote wellheads to run about 700 Avalon A15 Pro miners. The site operates inside modular containers and targets 90 percent uptime, aside from extreme weather or maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flare-gas approach tackles growing concerns about Bitcoin\u2019s energy use. Instead of wasting natural gas, the pilot captures and converts it into power. Canaan estimates that this system could reduce annual emissions by 12,000 to 14,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent. The company is partnering with Soluna Holdings to deploy 20 MW of Avalon A15 XP miners at the wind-powered Project Dorothy data center in Texas. Operations are expected to begin in early 2026.
