UK lawmakers have warned that banks’ refusal to serve cryptocurrency companies could become one of the biggest barriers to the country’s digital asset ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Crypto and Digital Assets All-Party Parliamentary Group has launched an inquiry into the issue. The group is examining whether banks’ restrictions are proportionate and how they affect businesses, consumers, competition, and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lawmakers say crypto companies need reliable banking services to receive customer funds, pay employees and suppliers, and manage day-to-day operations. Without that access, even firms that meet regulatory requirements could struggle to expand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The inquiry also follows concerns about restrictions on transactions involving crypto exchanges. Some UK banks have imposed limits or blocked certain payments, citing concerns about fraud, scams, money laundering, and the volatility of digital assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dispute highlights a growing tension in the UK’s crypto strategy. Regulators are building a formal framework intended to provide greater clarity for digital asset businesses, while banks remain cautious about serving the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Financial Conduct Authority plans to open applications for authorization under the new regime in September 2026. The new rules are expected to strengthen oversight while creating a clearer path for regulated crypto businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, lawmakers argue that regulatory clarity alone may not be enough if companies cannot access essential financial infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The parliamentary group is seeking evidence on banking access and transaction restrictions, with its inquiry expected to produce recommendations after the evidence-gathering process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
