The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission will hold industry talks on Aug. 20 as lawmakers pause efforts to advance the CLARITY Act, leaving the next major step in U.S. crypto regulation uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CFTC’s Innovation Advisory Committee is expected to discuss digital-asset markets, artificial intelligence-driven trading, prediction markets and customer protections. The meeting comes as regulators continue exploring ways to provide clearer rules for cryptocurrency markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The timing gives the CFTC talks added significance. The Senate entered its August recess without voting on the CLARITY Act, a major market-structure bill designed to establish clearer federal oversight of digital assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Senate is now expected to revisit the legislation in September. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has backed a Sept. 15 procedural vote, but the bill still needs 60 votes to advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The legislation would divide regulatory responsibilities between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the CFTC. It would also establish rules for digital commodities and clarify oversight of secondary-market trading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, lawmakers remain divided over issues including ethics requirements, consumer protections and the treatment of stablecoin-related rewards. Those disagreements have pushed the legislation beyond the Senate’s initial summer timetable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Aug. 20 meeting could offer the industry another avenue for discussing regulatory priorities while Congress remains inactive. Market participants are watching closely for signals about how aggressively the CFTC may expand its role in digital-asset markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The development follows the SEC’s cancellation of an Aug. 14 meeting that was expected to consider proposed crypto-related investment rules. That cancellation adds to uncertainty around the pace of regulatory changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For crypto companies and investors, the next few weeks could therefore prove important. Agency-level initiatives may continue even as Congress works toward a broader legislative framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
