PayPal shares plunged nearly 18% in premarket trading Friday after Stripe and Advent International reportedly walked away from their proposed acquisition of the payments company. The deal had valued PayPal at more than $50 billion and ranked among the largest potential leveraged buyouts in financial technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The collapse erased much of the take over premium that had lifted PayPal stock in recent weeks. Shares closed Thursday at $61.47 before falling sharply after reports emerged that the consortium had ended negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stripe and Advent had offered about $60.50 per PayPal share, valuing the company at roughly $53 billion. PayPal’s board reportedly considered the initial proposal too low, prompting discussions over a potentially higher offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, those negotiations have now ended. The consortium could still reconsider its position later, but there is no active deal on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
PayPal shares had gained more than 40% this quarter before Friday’s selloff. The rally reflected both take over speculation and stronger-than-expected second-quarter results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The failed deal puts renewed attention on PayPal’s ability to improve its business independently. The company has faced growing competition from Apple Pay, Google and other digital payment platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New CEO Enrique Lores has started a turnaround effort focused on clearer financial targets, operational changes and stronger profitability. PayPal also plans to reduce costs while concentrating on higher-margin parts of its business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company remains a major player in digital payments, processing trillions of dollars in transactions and serving hundreds of millions of active accounts. However, investors now have fewer reasons to expect a near-term take over premium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
