Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said Monday that the global economy has entered a period of accelerating investment, marking a sharp shift from the savings-heavy environment that dominated economic thinking after the 2008 financial crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking to G20 finance leaders, Warsh said capital is increasingly moving into productive investments rather than remaining idle. He argued that this change is helping support stronger economic growth and challenges the long-standing idea of secular stagnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Warsh contrasted today’s economy with earlier G20 discussions, when policymakers frequently focused on a global savings glut. That period featured abundant capital but relatively few attractive investment opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now, he sees the opposite dynamic emerging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If I were to try to characterize this moment, it would be one of a global investment surge,” Warsh said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The shift reflects growing investment across technology and other sectors. Artificial intelligence has become a major driver, with companies directing substantial capital toward computing infrastructure, energy, data centers and related technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Warsh’s comments also build on his recent argument that AI could raise productivity and expand the economy’s productive capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The investment boom could have important consequences for financial markets and monetary policy. Stronger capital spending can increase demand in the near term while potentially improving productivity and economic output over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Warsh has already highlighted rapid growth in U.S. business investment. He said equipment and intangible investment rose at its fastest pace since 2021, with AI-related spending accounting for more than half of this year’s capital expenditure growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the Fed remains focused on inflation. Warsh has said policymakers need convincing evidence that underlying inflation is moving toward the central bank’s 2% objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His latest remarks suggest he sees a global economy increasingly shaped by investment, technology and productivity rather than persistent excess savings.
