Coinbase has launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors, opening access to futures tied to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and other digital assets. The move gives sophisticated traders a new regulated venue for hedging, speculation and managing market exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The offering comes through Coinbase Financial Markets, a U.S.-regulated futures commission merchant registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Coinbase says the launch includes 23 perpetual and dated crypto futures contracts, alongside futures linked to commodities and other market indexes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The expansion marks a significant step for Coinbase in Canada as demand for crypto derivatives continues to grow globally. Derivatives allow traders to take long or short positions without directly buying the underlying asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new products are not available to every Canadian Coinbase customer. Investors must satisfy eligibility requirements based on their province and financial circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Coinbase, eligible Canadian customers generally must meet one of the qualifying criteria, including having at least $5 million in net financial assets excluding real estate or being a registered investment adviser or dealer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The derivatives accounts also operate separately from Coinbase’s Canadian spot trading services. Customers must fund derivatives accounts with U.S. dollars, while U.S. dollar coin can be converted into dollars for collateral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The contracts use smaller contract sizes designed to reduce upfront capital requirements. Coinbase says eligible traders can access leverage of up to 10 times, although the precise leverage available can vary by contract and position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leverage can significantly increase market exposure, but it can also magnify losses. Coinbase warns that losses from leveraged futures trading can exceed the initial amount invested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Canadian launch reflects the broader push by major crypto platforms to bring derivatives into regulated financial markets.
