Anthropic said it identified more than 3,500 accounts that it considered fraudulent. Activity reportedly peaked at nearly 3 million exchanges in a single day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-distillation-campaign-expands\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Distillation Campaign Expands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic alleges that Alibaba&#8217;s Qwen team used Claude&#8217;s responses to improve its own artificial intelligence models. The technique involves repeatedly querying a more capable model and using its outputs to train or refine another system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company said the campaign sought to extract Claude&#8217;s capabilities at scale rather than simply use the service for ordinary business or research purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The allegation follows an earlier disclosure in which Anthropic said Alibaba-linked accounts generated 28.8 million Claude exchanges between April 22 and June 5. The latest figure therefore represents a substantial increase in the volume Anthropic has attributed to Alibaba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. officials have also accused several Chinese AI companies of conducting industrial-scale distillation against leading American models. China has rejected the allegations and argued that distillation represents a legitimate technical method when used appropriately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-broader-ai-competition-intensifies\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Broader AI Competition Intensifies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic said Alibaba was among seven China-based laboratories involved in activity targeting Claude. It also named Moonshot, DeepSeek and Xiaomi in its latest threat assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company separately alleged that Moonshot and DeepSeek routed real customer conversations through Claude and used the resulting responses as training data. Anthropic said some of those conversations could contain sensitive information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The allegations arrive as Washington and Beijing prepare for discussions involving artificial intelligence safety and technology policy.
