The repricing marks a sharp change from earlier expectations. Markets had previously leaned toward another policy pause. However, fresh inflation data has increased pressure on policymakers to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
August consumer inflation provided the latest catalyst. Core CPI rose 0.3% from July, beating economists’ expectations for a 0.2% increase. Annual core inflation reached 2.4%, while headline inflation climbed to 3.4%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Energy prices have added another risk. Oil prices recently moved above $100 per barrel amid heightened geopolitical tensions. That could keep inflation elevated and make it harder for the Fed to justify delaying another rate increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Fed has maintained its policy rate at 3.50% to 3.75% this year. A quarter-point increase would lift the target range to 3.75% to 4%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Interest-rate futures also point to additional increases beyond September. Current pricing shows a meaningful chance of another hike by December, while longer-dated contracts imply rates could move substantially higher by June 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the June 2027 meeting, futures pricing spans outcomes from 3.50% to 5.50%, with the largest probabilities concentrated between 4% and 5%. That does not guarantee three hikes, but it shows markets are preparing for a considerably higher-rate environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The shift matters for financial markets, particularly cryptocurrencies and growth stocks. Higher rates generally increase the appeal of cash and government bonds while reducing liquidity available for riskier assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For crypto investors, a prolonged tightening cycle could therefore create additional pressure on Bitcoin and other digital assets.
