The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has sued Cash FX Group S.A. and several individuals over an alleged $950 million foreign-exchange fraud scheme tied partly to cryptocurrency payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The complaint alleges that Cash FX collected money from more than 400,000 participant accounts between 2019 and 2023. The company reportedly told customers that professional traders, proprietary software and artificial intelligence would generate substantial forex returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, regulators allege that Cash FX conducted little actual forex trading. The CFTC claims the operation instead used money from newer participants to fund payments presented as profits to earlier participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CFTC alleges that less than 1% of participant funds went toward actual forex trading. The agency also claims Cash FX issued account statements that falsely represented trading profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Participants reportedly received promises of returns as high as 15% per week. Such unusually high returns formed part of the sales pitch, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case also involves The Conversion Pros Inc. and its chief executive, Ronald Pope, along with Cash FX fo under and chief executive Huascar Jose Lopez Castillo and promoter Justin Halladay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The complaint identifies cryptocurrency wallets that allegedly received participant funds. According to the allegations, Lopez Castillo controlled wallets that received substantial amounts of the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CFTC claims participants collectively lost at least $406 million. More than 6,000 U.S. accounts allegedly contributed at least $27 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The agency is seeking restitution, disgorgement, civil monetary penalties, trading and registration bans, and permanent injunctions. The allegations remain unproven, and the defendants will have an opportunity to respond in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case highlights regulatory concerns surrounding investment schemes that combine high-return promises, multilevel marketing structures and cryptocurrency transfers.
