Bhutan Partners With 3iQ to Generate Returns From Sovereign Bitcoin Reserves
Bhutan is taking a new approach to managing its sovereign Bitcoin holdings. Canadian digital asset manager 3iQ Corp. has partnered with Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) to manage part of its Bitcoin treasury.
The partnership, announced on July 30, 2026, aims to generate long-term returns through low-risk, market-neutral investment strategies. The agreement marks a shift from simply holding Bitcoin toward actively managing digital assets to support economic development.
3iQ to Manage Undisclosed Bitcoin Allocation
Under the agreement, 3iQ will oversee a portion of GMC’s Bitcoin reserves. However, neither organization has disclosed the allocation size, management fees, or specific investment methods.
According to CoinDesk, GMC intends to use market-neutral strategies that seek returns while limiting exposure to Bitcoin price movements. Such approaches can involve derivatives, lending, or trading strategies designed to reduce directional market risk.
However, market-neutral investing does not eliminate financial risks. Counterparty failures, liquidity shortages, and unexpected market volatility could still affect investment performance.
Beyond managing Bitcoin, 3iQ plans to establish a long-term presence in Gelephu. The company will also support local employment, professional training, and knowledge sharing in digital asset management.
Bhutan’s 10,000 Bitcoin Development Commitment
The partnership follows Bhutan’s December 2025 announcement that up to 10,000 BTC would support Gelephu Mindfulness City’s development.
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck introduced the allocation as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country’s economic future. The Bitcoin reserves could support infrastructure development and financial innovation within the planned special administrative region.
However, questions remain about the relationship between Bhutan’s national Bitcoin holdings and GMC’s allocated treasury. Neither GMC nor 3iQ has publicly identified the exact source of the Bitcoin assigned to the investment mandate.
Building a Digital Asset Financial Hub
Gelephu Mindfulness City aims to become an international financial center focused on sustainability, technology, and institutional investment.
3iQ CEO Pascal St-Jean emphasized responsible capital management and long-term economic development when announcing the partnership. GMC officials also highlighted the importance of attracting international investment firms and developing local financial expertise.
The agreement represents a notable development in sovereign Bitcoin management. Rather than relying exclusively on long-term price appreciation, Bhutan is exploring ways to generate additional value from its digital asset reserves.
Future disclosures about investment performance, custody arrangements, and risk controls will help determine how effectively the strategy supports GMC’s ambitions.
