Cryptocurrency derivatives exchange BitMEX will permanently shut down its operations on September 23, marking the end of one of the industry’s longest-running trading platforms. The company announced that its parent, HDR Global Trading Limited, made the decision following a strategic review of both the business and the broader cryptocurrency market.
The exchange has already stopped accepting new user registrations. Existing customers, however, will have a limited transition period to close open positions and withdraw their funds before the platform goes offline. BitMEX said customer assets remain secure and encouraged users to complete the migration process well ahead of the shutdown deadline.
Shutdown Timeline
BitMEX plans to wind down operations in stages to reduce disruption for traders. The exchange said:
- New account registrations have been suspended immediately.
- Trading will continue under normal conditions until late August.
- After that point, users will only be able to reduce or close existing positions.
- Remaining open positions will be closed before the final shutdown on September 23.
- Customers will still be able to access their accounts to withdraw remaining balances after trading ends, although inactive balances may eventually become subject to maintenance fees.
A Pioneer That Shaped Crypto Derivatives
Founded in 2014, BitMEX helped transform cryptocurrency derivatives trading by introducing the perpetual swap contract in 2016. The innovation became the industry standard and was later adopted by nearly every major crypto derivatives exchange.
At its peak, BitMEX ranked among the world’s largest crypto trading platforms, attracting professional traders with high leverage products and deep liquidity. However, its market position weakened over the years as competitors expanded globally and regulatory scrutiny intensified.
The exchange also faced significant legal challenges related to anti-money laundering compliance. In recent years, the company and its founders resolved multiple regulatory cases, including substantial financial penalties, while implementing stricter compliance measures.
BitMEX said the decision to close follows a comprehensive review of its long-term business outlook rather than concerns about customer assets. The announcement closes a significant chapter in cryptocurrency trading history, ending the operations of a platform that played a defining role in the development of the global crypto derivatives market.
