BlackRock’s Ether ETF Sees $87M Outflow as Institutional Flows Swing

A Sharp Reversal in Ethereum ETF Flows

BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) recorded an $87.2 million outflow on August 18, marking the largest single-day withdrawal among U.S. spot Ether ETFs, according to Farside Investors. The redemption represented about 19,500 ETH, valued at roughly $4,472 per coin, and made up a significant portion of the $196.6 million industry-wide outflow that day.

This move came after weeks of strong demand that had pushed ETHA’s assets higher. Despite the outflow, trading volumes remained strong, and the fund’s net asset value closed at $33.02, down 0.78% on the day.

A Record-Level Exit

August 18 ranked as the second-largest daily outflow on record for the young Ether ETF market. The withdrawals highlight how quickly institutional investors can adjust positions in response to macroeconomic news or price swings.

Farside’s data shows:

  • BlackRock led with –$87.2 million.
  • Fidelity followed with –$78.4 million.
  • Several smaller issuers posted additional outflows.

Together, these moves drove the market’s total outflow to nearly $197 million. Such reversals often happen after a stretch of inflows, as investors lock in profits or reposition ahead of derivatives expiries.

Why It Matters for Ethereum

BlackRock’s role as a bellwether in the Ether ETF space makes its flows particularly influential. When its fund moves sharply, it can sway the entire category’s net results. Despite the August dip, Ether ETFs have recently shown an ability to draw strong institutional interest, sometimes even outpacing Bitcoin ETFs in net inflows.

This trend reflects growing attention on Ethereum’s evolving narrative, including discussions about possible staking features in future ETF structures. The consistent reporting across multiple sources reinforces the reliability of the August 18 figure, making it a notable event in Ether ETF history.
