Cboe Launches S&P 500 Prediction Markets With New Yes-or-No Contracts

Published:

Cboe Global Markets has officially entered the growing prediction markets sector by launching new binary options tied to the Mini S&P 500 Index. The product allows traders to take a simple yes-or-no position on where the index will finish at expiration, making market participation easier for retail investors.

The launch marks a major step for Cboe as exchanges and brokerages increasingly explore event-based trading products. Prediction markets have gained momentum in recent years, attracting users who want straightforward ways to express market views without using complex trading strategies.

How the New Contracts Work

The new contracts offer two primary choices:

• A “yes” position pays a fixed amount if the Mini S&P 500 Index closes at or above a specified level.

• A “no” position pays a fixed amount if the index closes below that level.

If the prediction is correct, traders receive a cash payout. If not, the contract expires without value. This structure resembles traditional prediction markets while remaining within a regulated options framework.

Cboe built the contracts around the Mini S&P 500 Index, which represents one-tenth of the standard S&P 500 Index. As a result, smaller investors can participate with lower capital requirements.

Beyond Traditional Binary Bets

Unlike many prediction market products, Cboe has also introduced a feature that may provide partial payouts in certain scenarios. This approach gives traders an opportunity to earn returns even when their forecasts are close but not perfectly accurate.

Furthermore, the company believes this structure better reflects how investors evaluate market outcomes. Rather than treating every prediction as completely right or wrong, the system can reward directional accuracy.

The prediction market industry has expanded rapidly as investors seek simpler ways to trade expectations around financial events. Platforms offering event-based contracts have attracted significant attention, and major financial firms are now moving into the space.

Cboe’s launch could help bring prediction-style trading to a broader audience through established brokerage channels. Therefore, the new S&P 500 contracts may become an important test of how mainstream investors respond to regulated prediction market products.
