China Adds 20 Tonnes of Gold in July as Reserves Hit Record 2,366 Tonnes

China’s central bank accelerated its gold buying in July, adding 20 tonnes to its reserves and extending its purchasing streak for a fifth consecutive month. The increase marked the largest monthly addition since October 2023, according to official data reported on August 7.

The latest purchase lifted China’s official gold holdings to a record 2,366 tonnes. The move highlights the central bank’s continued effort to strengthen its reserve portfolio amid shifting global economic and geopolitical conditions.

China’s Gold Buying Accelerates

The July increase followed a 15-tonne purchase in June and continued a buying trend that has stretched across multiple months. The latest addition also pushed the country’s official holdings higher despite volatility in global bullion markets.

China has steadily increased its gold allocation as part of broader reserve diversification. Gold can reduce exposure to currency and sovereign risks because it does not depend on another country’s financial system.

Furthermore, the buying comes as central banks globally continue to view gold as a strategic reserve asset. However, global central bank demand has been uneven during 2026, with reported purchases slowing earlier in the year.

Strategic Reserve Diversification

China’s sustained accumulation could have wider implications for the gold market. Large official-sector purchases can support physical demand and reinforce investor expectations that central banks will maintain elevated gold allocations.

The country has also been developing its role in global gold trading. Hong Kong recently introduced new infrastructure aimed at strengthening its position as a regional bullion hub.

China’s latest purchase therefore represents more than a monthly reserve adjustment. It adds to a longer-term strategy focused on diversification and financial resilience.

With reserves now at a record 2,366 tonnes, continued purchases by the People’s Bank of China could remain an important factor for gold markets. Investors will be watching future monthly data for signs that the central bank intends to maintain its accelerated buying pace.
