Coinbase Launches x402 Protocol to Power Autonomous AI Payments

A New Era for Online Payments and AI Agents

Coinbase has unveiled a groundbreaking payment protocol called x402, designed to revolutionize how machines and humans transact online. The new system enables instant stablecoin payments directly over the internet’s core protocol—HTTP—making it easier for APIs, apps, and AI agents to exchange value with minimal human involvement.

Announced on May 6, the x402 protocol revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code, turning it into a real-world solution for seamless web-based payments. Coinbase says this update addresses the internet’s “first mistake”: the lack of a native payments system.

x402 Turns AI Agents Into Economic Actors

The true innovation behind x402 lies in its potential to enable fully autonomous AI agents. These agents can now:

  • Make payments in real-time without pre-paid credits or human-managed accounts
  • Access paid APIs and resources as needed
  • Pay for compute power, specialized data, or services from other AI systems

This shift transforms AI from passive tools into proactive economic participants capable of independently securing the resources they need to function.

Erik Reppel, Coinbase’s head of engineering and co-author of the x402 white paper, summed it up: “We’re laying the groundwork for an economy run not just by people, but by software—autonomous, intelligent, and always on.”

Simplifying Monetization for the Web

According to Coinbase, traditional payment systems like credit cards and bank transfers are outdated, slow, and burdened by geographic and operational limitations. x402 aims to eliminate these issues by integrating payments directly into HTTP interactions with minimal coding required.

Some key benefits include:

  • Real-time monetization for API providers and content creators
  • Support for micropayments, eliminating the need for subscriptions or minimum charges
  • Metered services based on actual usage

Gagan Mac, VP of product at Circle, praised x402 for “elegantly simplifying real-time monetization,” particularly for emerging use cases involving AI.

Strategic Partnerships Behind x402

Coinbase isn’t building this alone. The x402 launch is backed by several major partners, including:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Stablecoin issuer Circle
  • AI firm Anthropic
  • Near Protocol, an AI-focused proof-of-stake blockchain

Together, these partners are helping integrate the x402 protocol into a broader ecosystem of apps and services, paving the way for a faster, smarter internet economy.
