Dubai to Let Residents Pay Government Fees With Crypto via Crypto.com

Dubai Advances Crypto Payments for Public Services

Dubai is moving closer to allowing residents to pay government service fees with cryptocurrency. The plan comes through a partnership between the Dubai Department of Finance and Crypto.com.

The agreement was first signed in May 2025 through a memorandum of understanding. Now, the project has moved forward after Crypto.com’s regional unit received a Stored Value Facilities license from the Central Bank of the UAE.

This approval allows Crypto.com to support digital asset payments for eligible Dubai government fees. As a result, residents may soon use crypto in a more practical way, beyond trading or investing.

Payments Will Settle in Dirhams

Under the new system, users can pay through Crypto.com’s platform with supported cryptocurrencies. However, government entities will not directly hold volatile digital assets.

Instead, payments will settle in UAE dirhams or approved dirham-backed stablecoins. This setup helps protect public accounts from crypto price swings.

The model gives residents more payment choices while keeping government finances tied to regulated local currency channels. Therefore, Dubai can support innovation without taking unnecessary market risk.

Key parts of the plan include:

  • Crypto payments for eligible government fees
  • Settlement in UAE dirhams or approved stablecoins
  • Licensed infrastructure through Crypto.com
  • Support for Dubai’s wider cashless payment goals

Dubai Strengthens Its Fintech Ambitions

The move supports Dubai’s Cashless Strategy, which aims to reduce reliance on physical cash. It also strengthens the emirate’s position as a global fintech and crypto hub.

For Crypto.com, the license is an important win in the UAE market. Its local entity, Foris DAX Middle East FZE, already operates within Dubai’s virtual asset framework. This gives the company a strong role in both crypto services and regulated payments.

However, the biggest test will come after launch. Dubai must show that residents will actually use crypto for public services. Other UAE government entities may also watch closely before making similar moves.
