Japanese Tourists Could Soon Pay With Yen Stablecoins in South Korea

Japanese travelers could eventually use yen-backed stablecoins to make everyday purchases in South Korea under a new financial partnership. South Korea’s Shinhan Card has joined forces with Japan’s SBI Group to explore blockchain-based payments and cross-border settlements. The initiative aims to connect digital assets with traditional payment systems while improving transaction efficiency.

Shinhan and SBI Launch Stablecoin Payment Initiative

Shinhan Card announced the agreement on October 21, following a signing ceremony in Tokyo on October 20. The partnership involves SBI VC Trade and SBI XDC Network APAC, two subsidiaries of Japan’s SBI Group.

The companies will conduct proof-of-concept trials covering card-linked stablecoin payments, wallet-to-wallet transfers, and international trade settlements. They will also examine potential participation in the XDC Network ecosystem, which supports blockchain-based financial transactions.

The proposed payment system would allow Japanese visitors to spend yen-denominated stablecoins through familiar card payment channels. For example, tourists could potentially pay at South Korean restaurants or stores without directly managing conventional currency exchanges.

Blockchain Payments Could Improve Cross-Border Transfers

Beyond tourism, the collaboration will investigate stablecoin transfers between digital wallets and businesses operating across national borders. The partners want to determine whether blockchain technology can reduce settlement delays and improve efficiency compared with traditional international payment networks.

However, security remains a central consideration. The companies plan to evaluate anti-money laundering procedures and fraud detection systems before considering broader implementation.

The project remains in its testing stage, and the partners have not announced a commercial launch date. They have also not identified the specific yen stablecoin that would support the proposed payment services.

Growing Institutional Interest in Stablecoin Infrastructure

The agreement reflects growing interest among Asian financial institutions in integrating stablecoins into mainstream payment infrastructure. Shinhan Financial Group previously partnered with Visa in August to explore digital assets and artificial intelligence-powered financial services.

Meanwhile, SBI has expanded its digital asset initiatives through partnerships involving stablecoin settlements and blockchain infrastructure. Its latest collaboration with Shinhan could provide another practical testing environment for these technologies.

Successful trials could eventually offer travelers more convenient payment options while helping businesses streamline international transfers. Nevertheless, commercial adoption will depend on technical performance, regulatory compliance, and effective integration with existing financial systems.

For now, the Shinhan-SBI partnership represents another step toward connecting traditional banking services with blockchain-based payments across Japan and South Korea.
