MoonPay Launches Korea Unit to Build Stablecoin Payments and Remittance Network
MoonPay has launched its Korean subsidiary as the crypto payments company targets South Korea as a base for expanding stablecoin and digital asset services across Asia.
The company plans to connect its global payments infrastructure with Korea’s banking and financial systems. Its focus includes cross-border remittances, payments, settlement and the international distribution of digital assets.
MoonPay is pursuing cooperation with Woori Bank, KB Financial Group and KakaoBank. The partnerships could help connect stablecoins with established banking channels and payment networks, although several planned services remain subject to regulatory requirements.
Stablecoin Services Take Shape
MoonPay expects demand from several cross-border use cases, including international students sending money abroad, foreign residents making payments in Korea and companies settling overseas transactions.
The company also plans to support won-denominated stablecoin distribution if Korea’s regulatory framework permits broader issuance and use. MoonPay has said it does not intend to issue its own Korean stablecoin.
The company will work with local institutions on key financial functions, including customer verification, deposits and withdrawals, payment processing and settlement.
MoonPay’s Korea Strategy
MoonPay has also invested in Korean fintech company Finger, seeking to connect its global digital asset infrastructure with domestic financial technology.
The company said it will expand Korean services in stages after meeting requirements for virtual asset service provider reporting, licenses and registrations. That approach reflects the evolving regulatory environment around stablecoins and digital assets in South Korea.
MoonPay said it has processed more than $45 billion in cumulative transaction volume and has more than 32 million verified users. It has also worked with more than 1,500 onboarding and transaction partners over the past year.
The Korea launch gives MoonPay a local platform for developing stablecoin payment and remittance products while it seeks to connect Korean financial infrastructure with international digital asset markets.
