Sberbank Tests Crypto Trading Ahead of Planned December Launch

sberbank

Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, has started testing cryptocurrency trading through its Sberbank Online app as it prepares to expand digital asset services to all clients on December 1, 2026. The planned rollout could bring Bitcoin, Ether and USDT trading into one of the country’s largest banking platforms, subject to regulatory requirements.

The pilot includes buying, selling, depositing and withdrawing cryptocurrencies. Sberbank also plans to extend the service to its SberInvestments and SberBusiness platforms, potentially giving retail investors and business customers access to crypto-related services through its existing financial infrastructure.

However, the December launch remains conditional on the implementation of supporting regulations. The Bank of Russia will determine which digital assets qualify for retail trading under the country’s developing cryptocurrency framework.

Sberbank Moves Into Regulated Crypto Trading

Sberbank’s testing phase follows a regulatory milestone on October 6, when the Bank of Russia included the lender in its register of digital depositories. This status provides a regulatory route for institutions to support the recording and transfer of digital assets.

The development forms part of Russia’s broader effort to establish a regulated framework for cryptocurrency trading and custody. New rules that took effect on September 1 created a structure for digital asset services involving authorized financial intermediaries.

Sberbank had previously outlined plans to develop cryptocurrency infrastructure, including custody services. The latest testing signals progress toward integrating those capabilities into its established digital banking channels.

Bitcoin, Ether and USDT Lead the Initial Testing

The current pilot covers Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Tether’s USDT stablecoin and other popular crypto assets. Bitcoin and Ether provide exposure to major cryptocurrency markets, while USDT offers a digital token designed to track the U.S. dollar.

Bringing these assets into a banking application could make cryptocurrency transactions more accessible to existing customers. Nevertheless, the bank has not publicly detailed the complete list of supported tokens or all the operating conditions for the planned service.

Russia’s framework also distinguishes between cryptocurrency investment and domestic payments. The country continues to prohibit the use of cryptocurrencies to pay for goods and services within Russia.

December Launch Depends on Regulatory Implementation

Sberbank’s planned December 1 expansion represents an important step in the development of regulated cryptocurrency services within Russia’s banking sector. If the necessary rules take effect as expected, customers could gain access to digital asset transactions through platforms they already use for conventional financial services.

The final launch date, eligible assets and service conditions will depend on regulatory implementation. Until those details are confirmed, the December timetable remains a target rather than a guaranteed launch.
