Stripe Reintroduces Crypto Payments Using Stablecoins

Published:

Stripe, a leading payment processor, is reintroducing cryptocurrency as a payment option, focusing on the stability of stablecoins like USDC, announced Co-founder and President John Collison. At a developer conference in San Francisco, Collison shared plans to roll out this feature starting this summer. Unlike its initial venture into crypto with Bitcoin in 2014, which was discontinued in 2018 due to its inefficiency as a payment method, Stripe’s renewed approach with stablecoins promises a more user-friendly and reliable payment experience.

Why Stablecoins?

The decision to use stablecoins over other forms of cryptocurrency stems from their inherent stability and reliable value, closely tied to the US dollar. Collison emphasized the practicality of stablecoins in today’s market, noting their resilience even amidst the broader crypto market fluctuations often referred to as “crypto winter.” Stripe plans to support USDC transactions across several major blockchains, including Solana, Ethereum, and Polygon, ensuring a broad accessibility for users.

The Benefits of Choosing USDC

  • Stability and Reliability: USDC is pegged to the US dollar, providing a predictable and stable value, which is crucial for both businesses and consumers who might be wary of the volatility associated with other cryptocurrencies.
  • Improved Transaction Efficiency: Compared to Bitcoin, stablecoins like USDC offer faster transaction times and lower fees, making them more suitable for real-time commerce.
  • Enhanced Global Use: Collison highlighted a significant increase in stablecoin usage globally, especially in regions experiencing currency instability, making it a valuable tool for international transactions.

Stripe’s Continuous Crypto Journey

Although Stripe distanced itself from Bitcoin payments in 2018, the company never completely left the crypto scene. It was involved in early initiatives like Facebook’s Libra project and has since been actively building its crypto engineering team to innovate within the crypto payment sphere. In addition, Stripe has developed several crypto-related services, such as fiat-to-crypto on-ramps in partnership with cryptocurrency exchanges, underscoring its commitment to integrating cryptocurrency in a practical and regulated manner.
