Telegram Introduces Gram Wallet as Crypto Adoption Push Reaches 1 Billion Users

Telegram has begun rolling out its native, non-custodial Gram Wallet, bringing cryptocurrency transfers and blockchain-based digital assets closer to its billion-plus user base. The initial deployment provides access to a limited group of users, with broader availability planned across the messaging platform.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced the wallet’s initial availability on August 31, 2026. He said the company would expand access to users over the following weeks, marking a significant step in Telegram’s strategy to integrate cryptocurrency services directly into its messaging ecosystem.

However, the announcement did not confirm that the wallet had reached every Telegram account or disclose the percentage of users with access.

A Native Wallet for Everyday Crypto Transactions

The Gram Wallet introduces self-custody functionality directly into Telegram. Unlike custodial wallets, which hold users’ assets on their behalf, a non-custodial wallet gives users control over their cryptocurrency through their own wallet keys.

Durov previously described plans for instant, zero-fee cryptocurrency transfers. He also highlighted a technical feature designed to make future wallet upgrades easier.

According to his announcement, validators approved the smart contract powering the wallet. This architecture is intended to let Telegram introduce future upgrades without requiring users to undergo disruptive wallet migrations.

The integration could lower the barriers to cryptocurrency adoption by allowing users to access wallet functionality without relying entirely on a separate crypto application. Nevertheless, the precise fee arrangements and complete feature set available during the initial rollout remain important details for users to assess.

Telegram’s Expanding Digital Collectibles Economy

The wallet’s introduction comes as Telegram continues developing its blockchain-based digital asset ecosystem.

The platform already supports collectible gifts that can be transferred through the TON blockchain. Collectible usernames also use blockchain-based ownership, allowing holders to assign or trade them through supported services.

Bringing wallet functionality closer to Telegram’s core messaging experience could simplify interactions with these assets. Users may increasingly be able to manage cryptocurrency and participate in digital collectibles markets within a familiar environment, although the wallet’s announcement did not provide a comprehensive list of supported assets at launch.

Self-custody also introduces additional responsibilities. Users must protect their wallet credentials and verify transactions carefully because mistakes or lost access can result in irreversible losses.

Telegram’s next challenge will be expanding access while making cryptocurrency management secure and straightforward for mainstream users. The scale of its existing audience gives the company considerable distribution potential, but adoption will depend on the wallet’s availability, usability and practical transaction costs.
