US Government Moves $1 Billion in Seized Bitcoin as Coinbase Prime Transfers Draw Attention

A wallet linked to the U.S. government transferred 12,267.02 Bitcoin (BTC), worth approximately $1.01 billion, on October 8, 2026. The transaction involved cryptocurrency recovered from the 2016 Bitfinex hack, according to blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence.

The massive Bitcoin transfer followed separate government-linked transactions involving Coinbase Prime. However, blockchain records did not confirm that the latest $1 billion movement reached the exchange or resulted in a sale.

Government Bitcoin Wallet Transfers $1.01 Billion

Arkham identified the sending wallet as holding Bitcoin seized during the investigation into the 2016 Bitfinex security breach. The wallet transferred approximately 12,267 BTC into newly created addresses that lacked publicly identified owners.

Transaction records showed that roughly 6,000 BTC moved to one address through two transactions. Another address received approximately 6,267 BTC, accounting for the remaining funds.

The destination addresses carried no confirmed exchange labels when analysts examined the transfers. Consequently, the transaction provided no direct evidence that authorities intended to liquidate the Bitcoin.

Coinbase Prime Receives Separate Government-Linked Transfers

The billion-dollar movement followed substantial transfers from other government-associated cryptocurrency wallets on October 7.

According to CoinDesk, approximately 3,200 BTC, valued at $264 million, and $119 million in Tether (USDT) reached Coinbase Prime deposit addresses. Those assets originated from wallets associated with the Bitfinex and FTX-related seizures.

Coinbase Prime provides institutional trading and cryptocurrency custody services. Therefore, transfers to its deposit addresses do not automatically indicate selling activity.

Similar transactions occurred in July 2026, when government-linked wallets transferred approximately $288 million in Bitcoin and Ethereum to Coinbase Prime. Some assets passed through intermediary addresses before reaching the platform.

Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Raises Questions

The latest activity has renewed attention on Washington’s management of seized cryptocurrency.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order in March 2025 establishing a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The policy directs the government to retain Bitcoin deposited into the reserve rather than sell those holdings.

However, authorities have not publicly clarified whether the Bitcoin involved in the October 8 transfer belongs to that reserve.

The 2016 Bitfinex hack resulted in the theft of approximately 119,756 BTC. U.S. authorities subsequently recovered more than 94,000 BTC connected to the case.

For now, the movement highlights the scale of government-controlled Bitcoin holdings. Without an official explanation or confirmed exchange deposit, the purpose of the $1.01 billion transfer remains uncertain.
