Wells Fargo to Launch Tokenized Deposits for Corporate Clients This Fall

Published:

Wells Fargo plans to introduce tokenized deposits for its corporate and commercial banking clients this fall, marking another major step by a large U.S. bank toward integrating blockchain technology into traditional financial services. The initiative will allow clients to transfer, settle, and program payments around the clock using digital representations of conventional bank deposits.

The new service will initially support U.S. dollar and British pound transactions, with a focus on improving cross-border payments for institutional customers. According to the bank, additional currencies and markets are expected to follow based on client demand.

Tokenized Deposits Expand Banking Capabilities

Unlike stablecoins, tokenized deposits remain traditional commercial bank deposits that are represented on a blockchain. Because they remain on a bank’s balance sheet, they operate within the existing banking and regulatory framework while offering benefits such as faster settlement, continuous availability, and programmable payment functionality.

Key features include:

  • 24/7 transfers and settlement
  • Programmable payment capabilities
  • Cross-border transactions in U.S. dollars and British pounds
  • Expansion into additional currencies planned in 2027

Wells Fargo said the platform will run on its own proprietary blockchain infrastructure, giving the bank greater control over security, operations, and future development.

Part of a Broader Banking Trend

The launch reflects a broader shift across Wall Street as major financial institutions adopt blockchain technology for wholesale payments and treasury operations. JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup have already introduced their own tokenized deposit offerings, while several of the nation’s largest banks are also working on a shared tokenized deposit network expected to launch next year.

The move comes as traditional banks increasingly position tokenized deposits as a regulated alternative to stablecoins for institutional payments. Industry participants believe tokenized bank deposits can combine blockchain efficiency with the legal protections and trust associated with commercial bank money.

Wells Fargo, which manages approximately $2.2 trillion in assets, is expected to make the new service available to its corporate client base later this fall, further signaling that blockchain-based payment infrastructure is becoming part of mainstream banking.
