Circle’s $400 Million Tazapay Deal Targets Hard-to-Build Emerging Market Payment Links

Published:

Circle is betting $400 million in stock can accelerate its push into global payments by acquiring Tazapay, a Singapore-based cross-border payments company with deep links across emerging markets.

The deal, announced Sept. 8, is expected to close in 2027 after customary conditions and regulatory approvals, including clearance from Singapore’s monetary authority. Circle will pay entirely in Class A common stock.

Tazapay brings more than $25 billion in annualized payment volume, over 60 banking and fintech partners, and local payout capabilities across more than 100 markets. About 60% of its transaction volume already involves stablecoins.

Local payment infrastructure is the strategic prize

For Circle, the acquisition goes beyond adding transaction volume. Tazapay provides the local banking relationships, licenses, payout rails and compliance infrastructure needed to connect digital dollars with local currencies.

Building that network independently could take years across individual markets. Tazapay already has licenses or registrations in Singapore, Canada, Australia and the United States. It also has applications pending in other major markets.

That footprint could help Circle expand USDC payments without waiting to establish every banking and regulatory connection from scratch.

The companies have already worked closely together. Tazapay became a design partner for Circle Payments Network in 2025. Circle Ventures also led Tazapay’s $36 million Series B extension in March.

USDC expansion drives the strategy

Circle sees the acquisition as a way to strengthen its ability to move money across borders around the clock. Tazapay’s infrastructure could connect USDC more directly to local payment systems and improve access in regions where traditional banking rails remain fragmented.

Tazapay serves more than 1,000 enterprises and fintech companies across 30 countries. The company has also reported three consecutive years of doubled revenue.

The transaction therefore gives Circle more than technology. It adds established relationships and regulated infrastructure that can support wider stablecoin adoption in cross-border commerce.

For customers, Tazapay says services will continue under existing terms while the acquisition moves through regulatory review. The companies expect the transaction to close in 2027.
