Mexican authorities have seized nearly 300 high-performance graphics processing units from a suspected clandestine cryptocurrency mining operation in Puebla, opening a wider investigation into electricity theft and potential money laundering.
The operation took place in Tlaola, a remote municipality in the Sierra Norte region. Officials from Mexico’s federal prosecutor’s office, Navy and Puebla’s public security authorities secured the property after investigators identified specialized computing equipment operating alongside extensive electrical infrastructure.
The seizure included a transformer, about 80 medium-voltage terminals and eight satellite internet antennas. Authorities said the GPUs were operating when investigators entered the facility.
Authorities Investigate Electricity Theft
The investigation centers primarily on suspected illegal electricity connections. Officials are examining whether the facility drew power unlawfully from infrastructure linked to a nearby hydroelectric complex.
Cryptocurrency mining requires substantial electricity because miners use specialized computers to perform intensive calculations. Remote locations can therefore offer an advantage for operators seeking to conceal large energy consumption.
Mexican authorities have also discovered several similar operations in the Puebla and Tlaxcala region. Officials are now examining whether additional facilities could be operating nearby.
Money laundering inquiry expands
Authorities have not established that the seized operation was directly controlled by a criminal organization. However, investigators are examining whether cryptocurrency generated at the site could have been used to disguise proceeds connected to illicit activities.
The case highlights growing concern about the intersection of cryptocurrency mining, organized crime and energy theft. While cryptocurrency mining itself is not prohibited in Mexico, illegally obtaining electricity is a criminal offense.
The Puebla operation also underscores the financial risks created when mining infrastructure operates outside regulated power networks. For authorities, tracking electricity consumption may provide an important lead in identifying hidden cryptocurrency operations.
The investigation remains active, and officials have not announced whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the facility.
