Crypto spot trading activity accelerated sharply in August, with volume across 14 major exchanges reaching $510.4 billion. The figure marked a 19% increase from July’s $429 billion, according to data released this week.
Thirteen of the 14 exchanges tracked recorded higher monthly volume. The broad-based increase suggests that the rebound extended beyond a single trading venue and points to stronger participation across major crypto markets.
The August surge also represented the strongest monthly increase recorded in 2026, based on the latest exchange-volume data.
Exchange Activity Broadens
Binance remained the dominant venue during the month, recording $243.1 billion in spot volume. That gave the exchange a 47.6% share of the total market tracked.
OKX ranked second with $46.9 billion, while Coinbase followed with $40.9 billion. Together, the three exchanges accounted for 64.8% of the combined volume.
Several other venues also posted substantial gains. Coinbase’s volume increased 35% from July, while Gate and Upbit each rose 39.3%. Bitfinex recorded an increase of nearly 59.6%, reaching $6.48 billion.
Only one exchange in the 14-venue sample recorded a monthly decline. Uniswap’s spot volume fell 18.7% to $19.9 billion.
Volume Rebound Highlights Market Concentration
The sharp increase in spot activity provides a notable signal for crypto market participation because it reflects direct buying and selling rather than leveraged derivatives exposure.
However, the figures require some caution. The underlying dataset notes that trading activity can include wash trading and automated bot transactions. The figures also underwent processing that included outlier removal and other adjustments.
Therefore, the August results are best viewed as a broad measure of exchange activity rather than a precise gauge of organic investor demand.
Even with that caveat, the simultaneous increase across most major venues highlights a meaningful recovery in crypto trading activity. The concentration of volume among the largest exchanges also shows how strongly liquidity remains clustered around a handful of major platforms.
