JPMorgan Brings JPM Coin to Ethereum as Institutional Blockchain Payments Expand
JPMorgan has expanded its U.S. dollar-denominated deposit token, JPM Coin (JPMD), to the Ethereum blockchain, strengthening its presence in institutional digital finance. The October 19 announcement marks another step in the banking giant’s strategy to bring traditional financial services onto public blockchain networks.
The expansion allows institutional clients to conduct peer-to-peer transfers across the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) ecosystem, including Ethereum and Base. JPMorgan aims to improve payment efficiency, liquidity management, and settlement processes through blockchain technology.
JPM Coin Expands Beyond Base to Ethereum
JPMorgan initially introduced JPMD on Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network developed by Coinbase, in November 2025. The token represents U.S. dollar deposits held at JPMorgan and allows approved institutional customers to transfer funds using blockchain infrastructure.
Unlike conventional stablecoins, JPM Coin operates as a tokenized commercial bank deposit. It maintains a direct connection to JPMorgan’s banking infrastructure while offering near-instant settlement and around-the-clock transaction capabilities.
The Ethereum expansion provides institutional clients with access to a larger blockchain ecosystem that supports tokenized assets and decentralized financial applications.
According to Kinexys, JPMorgan’s blockchain division, Ethereum’s established liquidity and growing tokenized asset market make it a logical destination for JPMD.
Institutional Blockchain Adoption Gains Momentum
The latest development reflects JPMorgan’s broader efforts to integrate blockchain technology into traditional financial markets.
Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, emphasized that tokenized financial infrastructure is already transforming liquidity management, settlement operations, and digital asset transactions.
JPMorgan has also expanded its tokenization initiatives beyond payments. The bank introduced a tokenized money market fund on Ethereum in December 2025 and followed with another fund in May 2026.
Meanwhile, Kinexys has processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions, with average daily transaction volumes reaching approximately $7 billion.
These figures highlight the growing role of blockchain infrastructure in institutional finance, particularly for organizations seeking faster settlement and more efficient capital management.
Ethereum Strengthens Its Institutional Finance Position
JPM Coin’s expansion could strengthen Ethereum’s position as a settlement network for traditional financial institutions entering blockchain markets.
For institutional clients, tokenized deposits offer a way to move existing bank money across blockchain networks without relying entirely on conventional payment systems.
However, JPM Coin remains restricted to eligible institutional participants rather than the broader cryptocurrency market.
The expansion signals JPMorgan’s continued commitment to connecting regulated banking services with public blockchain infrastructure as institutional demand for tokenized financial products grows.
