OKX-ICE Faces Major Setback as Corporate Objections to Tokenized Stocks Reach 50

OKX

The proposed tokenized stock trading platform backed by cryptocurrency exchange OKX and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) faces growing resistance from major U.S. corporations. Nvidia, Nike, Costco, Micron and Reddit have joined the latest wave of companies objecting to the initiative.

According to an updated public notice dated October 30, the number of companies opposing the platform has reached 50. However, only 43 belong to the venture’s original list of 62 companies, highlighting an important distinction in the figures.

Corporate Opposition to Tokenized Stocks Accelerates

The latest disclosure added 12 companies to the objection list, up from 38 on October 28. Alongside Nvidia and Nike, the new objectors include CrowdStrike, Corning, IREN, USA Rare Earth, Bloom Energy, Palo Alto Networks and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

Several major corporations had already rejected participation, including Microsoft, Alphabet, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Intel, Walmart and Eli Lilly.

The objections have increased rapidly throughout October. The total stood at nine on October 15, climbed to 22 by October 23 and reached 38 by October 28.

The latest increase brings the total to 50, although seven objecting companies were not part of the original proposed trading roster. The public notices do not provide specific explanations for individual companies’ decisions.

SEC Framework Gives Companies Control

OKX and ICE aim to introduce blockchain-based trading of tokenized U.S. equities through their OKXICE venture. The proposed platform would allow investors to trade digital representations of traditional shares around the clock.

Transactions would settle using stablecoins, potentially offering faster settlement and greater trading flexibility than conventional stock markets.

However, the Securities and Exchange Commission’s innovation exemption gives companies 30 days to object to unauthorized third-party tokenization of their shares.

Companies that submit objections can prevent their stocks from trading on the proposed venue under this framework. Importantly, these objections do not necessarily indicate opposition to blockchain technology or tokenized securities generally.

Tokenization Ambitions Face Growing Challenges

The rising number of objections presents a significant challenge for OKXICE as it prepares to enter the emerging tokenized equities market.

Supporters believe blockchain-based securities could improve market accessibility, settlement efficiency and trading availability. Nevertheless, corporate participation remains essential to expanding the model.

With 43 of its original 62 proposed issuers now objecting, OKXICE faces mounting uncertainty over its initial trading lineup. The situation underscores the difficulty of bringing traditional financial assets onto blockchain networks without broad issuer support.
