Singapore Exchange Challenges Offshore Crypto Perpetual Markets

Published:

Singapore Exchange is opening its Bitcoin and Ether perpetual futures to eligible U.S. institutional investors, creating a new link between American trading firms and Asia’s crypto derivatives markets. The move comes as regulators and traditional exchanges increasingly bring perpetual contracts into regulated financial markets.

SGX received authorization under a Commodity Futures Trading Commission framework that allows recognized foreign exchanges to provide qualifying U.S. participants direct access to their trading systems. The approval gives American institutions access to SGX’s existing contracts without requiring the Singapore exchange to establish a separate U.S. listing.

The development also intensifies competition for a fast-growing segment of crypto trading.

Institutional Access Expands

SGX launched its Bitcoin and Ether perpetual futures in November 2025. The contracts have since generated about $5.8 billion in cumulative trading volume, equivalent to roughly 400,000 lots.

Bitcoin remains the dominant product. It represents about 83% of average daily volume since launch and 66% of open interest. The exchange recorded its busiest session at roughly $145 million in notional volume.

U.S. institutions will access the products through clearing members. New clients must complete compliance checks, funding arrangements and technical connections. The onboarding process typically takes two to four weeks.

A Different Model for Perpetuals

SGX’s structure gives institutional traders a traditional exchange framework around a crypto-native product.

The perpetual contracts do not expire, allowing traders to maintain exposure without rolling conventional futures. However, SGX uses established margin and clearing procedures rather than the structures common on offshore crypto platforms.

The exchange also does not accept stablecoins as collateral. That approach reflects its focus on conventional institutional risk management.

The move arrives as U.S. markets develop their own regulated perpetual products. SGX now gives American firms another venue while connecting them with Asian liquidity.

Looking ahead, SGX plans to expand into dated Bitcoin and Ether futures and options. That roadmap suggests perpetuals are only the first step in a broader institutional crypto derivatives strategy.
