Standard Chartered Expands Institutional Bitcoin and Ether Trading to UAE

Published:

Standard Chartered has launched spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether for institutional clients in the United Arab Emirates, extending its digital asset services across a market that has become a major hub for regulated cryptocurrency activity.

The bank said eligible institutional clients can now access deliverable Bitcoin and Ether spot trading through its electronic trading channels. The service operates through Standard Chartered DIFC and uses the bank’s existing trading infrastructure.

The move makes Standard Chartered the first global systemically important bank to offer institutional spot crypto trading in the UAE. It also strengthens the bank’s position as traditional financial institutions expand their involvement in digital assets.

Building a UAE Digital Asset Platform

Standard Chartered’s UAE trading service adds execution capabilities to its existing digital asset custody business, which launched in Dubai in 2024.

Institutional clients can use familiar foreign exchange interfaces to execute cryptocurrency trades. They can also settle their assets with a custodian of their choice, including Standard Chartered’s own digital asset custody service.

The bank’s offering currently focuses on Bitcoin and Ether, the two largest cryptocurrencies by market value. Standard Chartered first introduced institutional spot trading for the assets through its UK branch in 2025.

The UAE has become an increasingly important market for financial firms seeking regulated access to digital assets. Dubai, in particular, has developed a regulatory framework aimed at supporting institutional participation while imposing oversight on virtual asset activities.

A Broader Institutional Crypto Strategy

Standard Chartered’s UAE expansion reflects a broader strategy to connect traditional finance with digital assets. The bank has developed services covering custody, trading, collateral management and tokenization.

The latest launch also follows the bank’s work with crypto market infrastructure providers. Earlier this month, Standard Chartered participated in an inaugural Bitcoin spot trade on 24X’s institutional multi-asset trading platform.

For institutional investors, direct access through a major international bank could help simplify execution and settlement while providing an alternative to traditional crypto exchanges.

The UAE launch therefore marks another step in the integration of cryptocurrency markets with established financial infrastructure. As regulation develops and institutional demand grows, banks are increasingly positioning themselves to serve clients seeking controlled and compliant access to digital assets.
