Verizon has secured a deal worth more than $1 billion with Google to provide dark fiber connectivity for the technology company’s expanding data center network, marking a significant win as demand for AI infrastructure continues to accelerate.
Chief Executive Officer Dan Schulman announced the agreement during Verizon’s post earnings conference call, describing it as part of a broader strategy to expand the company’s infrastructure business beyond traditional telecommunications services. The agreement will supply dark fiber connections that support Google’s growing network of data centers, which require high capacity, low latency connectivity to power artificial intelligence workloads and cloud computing services.
Growing AI Infrastructure Demand
The deal highlights how major telecommunications providers are benefiting from the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure. As hyperscale technology companies invest billions of dollars in new data centers, reliable fiber networks have become a critical component for connecting facilities and handling the surge in data traffic.
Schulman also signaled that Verizon’s infrastructure business could continue to grow. He said the company expects to announce additional agreements before the end of the year that could collectively generate multiple billions of dollars in revenue over the next several years.
Key highlights include:
- The contract is valued at more than $1 billion.
- Verizon will provide dark fiber connectivity for Google’s data centers.
- Additional infrastructure agreements are expected later this year.
Verizon Expands Beyond Traditional Wireless
The Google agreement comes as Verizon continues to diversify its revenue streams while improving its core wireless business. Alongside announcing the infrastructure contract, the company raised its full year adjusted earnings outlook following stronger than expected subscriber growth and improved profitability.
The agreement also reflects the increasing convergence of telecommunications and artificial intelligence infrastructure. As cloud providers accelerate capital spending to support AI services, demand for high performance fiber networks is creating new long term revenue opportunities for telecom operators.
For Verizon, the Google partnership represents one of its largest infrastructure contracts to date and reinforces its strategy of positioning its nationwide fiber assets to serve the rapidly expanding AI economy.
