Zilliqa Halts ZIL Transfers After Exchange Partner Reports Cold Wallet Theft

Published:

Zilliqa has temporarily suspended ZIL deposits and withdrawals across centralized exchanges after an exchange partner suffered a security breach involving the theft of tokens from a cold wallet. The blockchain network announced the precautionary measure as it works with affected parties to investigate the incident and limit the movement of the stolen assets.

The project said exchanges were immediately notified and asked to pause ZIL transfers while investigators determine the root cause and assess the full extent of the breach. At the time of publication, Zilliqa had not disclosed the identity of the affected exchange or the amount of ZIL stolen. Trading activity on exchanges may continue where supported, but deposit and withdrawal services remain temporarily suspended.

Investigation Underway

According to the project team, the security incident involved an exchange partner’s cold wallet, which is typically considered one of the safest methods for storing digital assets because it remains offline. Although cold wallets offer stronger protection than internet-connected wallets, they are not immune to sophisticated attacks or operational security failures.

Zilliqa said it is coordinating with the relevant organizations to establish exactly how the compromise occurred. Furthermore, the network emphasized that the transfer suspension is intended to prevent the stolen tokens from being moved or liquidated through centralized trading platforms while the investigation continues.

The project also urged users to rely on official communication channels for verified updates and warned against speculation until more information becomes available.

Market Watches for Further Details

The incident highlights the ongoing security risks facing cryptocurrency exchanges, even when digital assets are stored in cold wallets. While exchange hacks have become less frequent in recent years due to improved custody practices, high-profile breaches continue to demonstrate that offline storage alone does not eliminate operational and security risks.

For now, ZIL holders are expected to experience temporary disruption when moving funds between exchanges and external wallets. However, the network has not indicated that the blockchain itself has been compromised. Instead, current information suggests the issue is limited to an exchange partner’s custody infrastructure.

Zilliqa said it will provide additional updates once investigators verify more details and determine the full scope of the incident.
