Binance Executive Tracked to Kenya, Extradition to Nigeria Underway

Published:

Nadeem Arjarwalla, a Binance executive who escaped from Nigerian custody, has been located in Kenya, with efforts to extradite him back to Nigeria currently in progress. The Nigerian Government, collaborating with Interpol and Kenyan police, is acting to address charges related to allegations of currency manipulation by the cryptocurrency exchange.

Charges and Escape

Arjarwalla was detained in Nigeria along with another Binance executive following accusations that the exchange manipulated the Nigerian naira. The country’s Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) charged them with money laundering among other offenses. Arjarwalla managed to escape custody on March 22 and fled Nigeria using a Kenyan passport, despite his UK passport being held by Nigerian authorities.

Extradition Efforts

The process to bring Arjarwalla back from Kenya involves intricate coordination between Nigerian officials, Interpol, and the Kenyan police. The case highlights the complex nature of international law enforcement in dealing with high-profile financial crimes.

While Arjarwalla is still at large, the other detained Binance executive, Tigran Gambaryan, has pleaded not guilty and awaits further legal proceedings. His situation has garnered public attention, with a petition for his release receiving thousands of signatures.

Binance’s Response

Following the controversy, Binance announced its decision to cease all transactions in the Nigerian naira and delisted naira trading pairs from its peer-to-peer platform. This move came shortly after the Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor highlighted concerns over illicit transactions involving crypto exchanges, specifically naming Binance for suspicious fund flows.

As the situation unfolds, the crypto community and international regulators are closely watching the outcomes of this case, which could have significant implications for cryptocurrency operations and regulations worldwide.
